Drum roll please……!
After weeks and weeks of planning, “Pipes for Percussion” was able to raise $100.00 to donate to the World Percussion Group to contribute to their lost personal belongings and percussion equipment while on tour this passed spring.
Although the funding goal of at least $200 was not reached, I will still say with pride that the benefit concert was, indeed, a success.

The program was as follows:
1. CatCall Acapella – Opening piece
2. Ethan Tang, Violin – “Dangerous” by David Guetta
3. Ashley Sova, Voice – “Dyin’ aint so bad” Maralee Whitely- Piano
4. Catcall Acapella – Ensemble piece
5. Christine Yi, Saxophone – W/ Catalina Quartet
6. Tianshu Wu, Guzheng – “Fantasia”
7. Julia Gundacker, flute- “Muczinksy’s Three Preludes”
8. William Mulvihill, piano “Sonata in G minor” by William Mulvihill
INTERMISSION
9. Riley Taylor, Clarinet – Cinco Bocetos – by Roberto Sierra

It was a splendid program with unique, out-of-this-world talents. To view some recordings of these performers, please check out my media page.
What was unique about this program?
- Tianshu Wu’s featured premiered her performance of the Guzheng in the United States that night!
- Ethan Tang’s accompaniment was an electronic background recording!
- Most of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia came to support the concert after their own American Concert and received an unexpected serenade after.
- University of Arizona alumnus Jeff Hewitt of the World Percussion Group graciously attended.
- Over 50% of seats were filled in the audience with performers, family, and friends.
- Tau Beta Sigma donated food and drink for the event.
- Someone pre-arranged the audience chairs before I arrived to set up and decorate.
- Compliments were continuously given for the overall production of the event.
For this 1st annual benefit concert, I would say that this was definitely a success! Thank you to ALL of the performers for providing the talents for a great cause!
What are some improvements for the future?
- Get retirement homes to commit to provide transportation to their residents to this event.
- Advertise more with flyers campus wide.
- Perhaps hold a silent auction to raise more funds in the future.
- Have an assigned videographer and photographer.
- Have stagehands.
All in all, because Sigma Alpha Iota helped at the event, and since I put them as the “hosts” of “Pipes for Percussion”, I wish them the best in next year’s benefit. That said, “Pipes for Percussion” will remain to be the title for future concerts. It will set as a reminder the initial reason why such events are hosted and how the inspiration began. I thank Dr. Karin Nolan for her wisdom in the Careers in Music class, who believed in me and my fellow classmates to accomplish great things.
Lastly, I truly hope that my first try at hosting this benefit will help Sigma Alpha Iota to continue the new tradition, to move forward, and to have an even more successful time at the 2nd Annual “Pipes for Percussion” Benefit Concert.
Thank you all for joining me on this journey!
Until next time,
Katelyn
