A Project in Summary

Over the course of approximately eight weeks, I have had the opportunity to produce and manage the first annual benefit concert with the Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music at The University of Arizona.

Ultimately wanting a career in entertainment law, I originally planned to use this benefit concert to debut a CD collaboration that featured Fred Fox School of Music musicians and highlight the contract involved in working with musicians and recording productions. After realizing the man power it actually takes in meeting with various musicians and recording contracts, I found that such a project may have to wait for the day when getting a degree and working a different job is not so much in the picture.

That said, the benefit concert led me from the contracting scene to a non-profit charitable arm to what I now have as a philanthropic cause!

“Pipes for Percussion”

With $5 tickets, fees for food, and donations, all proceeds will be going to an alumni percussionist from The University of Arizona and his World Percussion Group. The funds will help them restock up to $25,000 worth of their stolen equipment.

Why am I interested in this cause?

Being able to manage a concert allows me to explore my interests in collaborating with non-profits, musicians, and helping other musicians in need. Being a musician myself, working on projects like these makes me feel like I am making a difference in a music community.

Philanthropy allows me to be a part of something bigger than myself.

How did I accomplish this concert?

Well, since the concert is yet to come (Sunday, May 1st), I have multi-tasked my way each week to organizing this event. In my MUS427 Careers in Music class, we were assigned to create a timeline for each week.

What did I learn?

ONE SIMPLY CANNOT FOLLOW TIMELINES.

So, here is what I did:

(I shall bullet point tasks that I have completed over these last two months.)

  • Set a date
  • Create a registration form to get performers
  • Make a poster
  • Execute public relation skills to the community and the listservs of the Fred Fox School of Music
  • Continue advertising
  • Reach out to musicians I thought would be a great addition to the benefit concert program
  • Get word out to the World Percussion Group about the benefit
  • Reserve a room at the school
  • Delegate tasks to Sigma Alpha Iota members
  • Talk to faculty about my production
  • Get others involved in contributing to the concert night and the cause

What are the results? What obstacles have I overcome as an individual?

The results are yet to come! However, the concert program is being finalized as I have received more than enough submissions for a glorious evening.

I would like to say that I have thus far accomplished great time management, production skills, and the ability to provide hope to musicians on tour.

Hope and gratitude have truly been the most rewarding results throughout these couple months.

This project helped me realize that there a many more things with non-profits and event planning that I would like to explore after graduation. Even more so, it looks to me that I may want to work with non-profits in the long-run. I love the pro-activity in accomplishments multiple tasks I give myself in all of this.

Additionally, creating advertisements and reaching out to communities and potential peers allows me to network on my own. I am the one initiating these conversations with various people and organizations because I know that those I talk to have a similar interest to my own interest. To me, there is no reason why I shouldn’t be reaching out to others in this way.

I can only hope that I keep in contact and in relations with those that I connect, network, and collaborate with.

Here’s to the end of the semester.

Next stop, graduation and future goals.
